Do you make New Year’s Resolutions? Can you keep them? Every New Year, we make resolutions for the year to come. Many times, they are health related… either physical health, mental or emotional health. What is yours for 2014? How do you stick with it?

Here are some tips to making & keeping a resolution:

  • Determine what is your resolution and be specific. “I want to workout more often.” Isn’t clear enough. How about “I will workout 3 times a week in the New Year.”
  • Write it down! Keep it clear and specific and write it down and post on your fridge, planner or on a calendar. If you are exercising 3 times a week… write it on the calendar and pick those 3 days right now!
  • Tell other people and help them keep you accountable
  • Make it realistic - “I will never drink coffee again.” Isn’t realistic if you are currently drinking a half pot of coffee every morning. Try something like; “I will drink only 1 cup of coffee a day.”
  • Make sure it aligns with your beliefs and values and it’s something that is important to you
  • Don’t beat yourself up, if you don’t keep it all the time – 80% of the time is better than just quitting altogether
  • Consider others in your resolution… “I will volunteer once a month in 2014.”
