Engaging Manufacturing Employees in Worksite Wellness

Find me on:

According to an Aon Hewitt study, 79% of consumers view making smart choices every day as the number one factor that leads to good health. At the same time, 85% of consumers also say obstacles such as lack of time and affordability often get in the way of them making smart choices. As a provider of worksite wellness programs, we often hear these same obstacles from our participants.

To assist in behavior change when these or other barriers exist, one approach we use is to encourage and promote small positive changes. However, if your organization is in the manufacturing industry, you know that engaging these employees even in small changes can be challenging. Manufacturing employees tend to have limited access and comfort with technology, limited time that can be spent away from the line and a wide range of education and literacy levels. As a result, we know from experience that you must be creative with how you market your worksite wellness program. With our clients, we use a variety of tactics to support manufacturing employees on the path to a healthier life.

Here are a few creative approaches we use at some current client sites:

  1. Healthy Interactions - An educational demonstration where participants have the opportunity to interact with the Kapnick Wellness Team and learn about health and wellness. Think blood pressure checks, smoothie demonstration, flexibility assessments, etc.   We set up either in the break room or by the time clock during shift changes. (See attachment)
  2. Pocket-size tips – Our team provides certain clients with quick information in a format that workers can easily understand and take with them.
  3. Poker Walks – Our wellness team will designate a walking lap. During break times, employees complete 5 walking laps. After each lap they receive a playing card. At the end of the 5 laps, whoever has the best “poker” hand wins a prize. This event typically only takes 10-15 minutes.
