How to Choose the Right Running Shoe

Posted by kapnick on May 30, 2014 8:07:56 AM

Everyone has different needs when it comes to picking the right running shoe. Many factors play a role in your decision – your weight, your biomechanics, the type of surface you run on, and lastly the shape of your feet. Shoes can be divided into three main categories, performance, stability, and neutral.

Performance – This type of running shoe is typically recommended for racing. They vary in degrees of support and cushioning, but they are generally narrower and lighter than other running shoes.

Stability – This type of running shoe is recommended for runners who are mild to moderate overpronators and generally have low to normal arches. These types of runners need a shoe that has good support and midsole cushioning.

Neutral – This type of running shoe is recommended for runners who are biomechanically efficient (with minimum pronation) and midfoot or forefoot strikers with high or normal arches.

Listed below are the three most common foot shapes and the recommend shoe type.

The Normal Foot – Has a normal sized arch. This type of foot lands on the outside of the heel and rolls inwards slightly to absorb shock. This is the foot of a runner who is biomechanically efficient. Best Shoe: Stability shoes

The Flat Foot – Has a low arch. This is usually a runner that strikes on the outside of the heel and rolls inwards (pronates) excessively. Best Shoe: High stability shoes with firm midsoles.

The High-Arched Foot – Has a curved, highly arched foot. It is generally supinated or underpronated. Not an effective shock absorber. Best Shoe: Cushioned or neutral shoes with plenty of flexibility.
