6 Tips to Battle the Holiday Bulge

Posted by kapnick on Dec 16, 2014 11:29:00 AM

For the next few weeks, practice some of these healthy living tips to prevent that holiday weight gain after all the Christmas  and New Year parties - the below tips will help you battle the holiday bulge:

  1. Exercise every morning!  Start every day for the next two weeks with 15-20 minutes of exercise (hit the gym, a DVD at home, walk, bike, run up and down the stairs, do push-ups and squats or jumping jacks).
  2. Eat more apples!  Apples are loaded with fiber and water and help fill you up before a party.  You will naturally eat fewer calories.

  3. Drink lemon water every morning!   This is excellent as a mini "detox" after eating too many treats.

  4. Make a concerted effort to have only ONE helping of food.

  5. Pick your FAVORITE dessert and enjoy it!   Don't have a "little bit of everything".  Just pick one or two of your favorite desserts and enjoy them

  6. Are you baking this holiday season?   Use applesauce, baby food, canned pumpkin or mashed bananas instead of the oil.  If you swap a half cup of oil for a half cup of one of these other items, you can save about 110 grams of fat in your next pan of brownies or loaf of pumpkin bread

Snoopy's Halloween Safety Tips

Posted by kapnick on Oct 31, 2014 4:17:30 PM

Halloween is a scary time, but the fear should be all in fun. Help prevent a trick-or-treat tragedy by sticking to some basic safety guidelines when handing out treats to the neighborhood children.

  • Stick to handing out individually wrapped candy and treats. Many parents are wary of home-baked or unwrapped items.
  • Make sure treats that contain common allergens, such as peanuts, are clearly marked.
  • Turn on your outdoor light both as a signal that you are handing out candy, as well as to prevent anyone from tripping and falling in the dark.
  • Remove any obstacles from the walkways, such as a stray garden hose or unlit lawn decorations.
  • Park your car so as not to obstruct parents’ views of their children as they approach your door.

After all the Halloween candy has been devoured,
some tips on Dental Health for Children may come in handy!

Trick-or-treating for Halloween candy caps off the month of October for most children, but with the sugary holiday comes the potential for something much scarier than plastic lawn ghosts—cavities and dental bills.

Whether your children are consuming large quantities of sugary treats or not, maintaining dental hygiene is an important habit to teach children. The best time to instill good dental habits is when your child is still young.
