I think it’s great to support children’s interest in cooking for a few reasons. Here’s why, it fosters their creativity and it is a hands-on activity, cooking helps kids understand where food comes from and how it’s made, which can help healthy kids grow into healthy adults, and well, it’s one more pair of hands to help mom and pop in the kitchen!
Fooditude, an interactive website that features easy recipes and engaging education material with a fun, colorful design. It is based in Chicago and kids can watch webisodes or go to the food lab and learn about the science of food. Real kids chime in with their blogs and comments on the recipes, which include healthy snacks like Peanut Butter Apple Stacks and more filling options like veggie Garden Burritos.
Here is a great recipe that kids can help out and the whole family will enjoy:
Burrito Directions
- Pour beans in colander and rinse with water
- Bean Bag Toss! Pour beans into a plastic bag. Seal the bag and place inside another bag. Toss back and forth to smash it up!
- Combine mashed beans, cheese, salsa, cilantro, and adobe sauce into a large bowl
- Scoop 1/2 cup filling onto bottom half of tortilla
- Fold tortilla in half from bottom
- Take the left side of tortilla and fold towards the center. Then take the right side of tortilla and fold in towards the center
- Roll up burrito so that the seam side is down. Roll tightly and try to keep filling from falling out.
Salsa Directions
- In a food processor or blender, add garlic, onion, cilantro, lime, olive oil, hot pepper, and adobe sauce.
- Pulse 5 to 7 times, or until chunky.
- Add tomatoes and pulse 3 times or until mixture is chunky, do not pulse too much.
