Summer Safety for Physical Activity

Posted by kapnick on Jun 19, 2014 5:36:49 AM

This week I would like to talk about the importance of summer safety when it comes to swimming, biking and the sun. I believe this is an important topic because one, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death among children ages 1-4 and children 10-14 years of age. Two, July, August and September have the highest percentage of bicycle-related deaths. Lastly skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Below are a few suggestions on how to be proactive when it comes to these safety concerns. I have also added links to some national websites for more information. Be safe this summer!

Water Safety

  • Make sure your children learn how to swim.
  • Call children out of the pool once per hour to rest and hydrate.
  • Keep children younger than 4 years at arm’s length away.
  • If you suspect your child has swallowed too much water, take them out of the pool for at least 30 minutes.

Bicycle Safety

  • Make sure your children always wear a helmet.
  • Ride during daylight hours.
  • Wear bright colored clothes and reflectors.

Sun Safety

  • Use sunscreen that is at least SPF 15 and that protects against UVA and UVB sun rays.
  • Wear 99-100% UVA/UVB sunglasses to protect your eyes.
  • Limit “sun time” especially between 10am and 4pm.
