Health & Wellness - What is the Mediterranean Diet?

Posted by kapnick on Jan 31, 2013 1:50:26 PM

The Mediterranean diet has fewer meats and carbohydrates and more plant-based foods and monounsaturated (good) fat than a typical American diet. Many people who live in Italy, Spain, and other countries in the Mediterranean region have eaten this way for centuries.

Cyber Liability Insurance - Small Hospice fined for Lost Laptop

Posted by kapnick on Jan 28, 2013 10:13:05 AM

I have been discussing the inevitability that government fines for egregious data breaches will eventually reach small medical practices for some time now. In early January my prediction became a reality when the Office of Civil Rights administered a fine for $50,000 for the loss of an un-encrypted laptop by a small hospice facility in Northern Idaho. Their fine for the theft of a laptop with 441 un-encrypted patient medical records sends a clear signal from the Department Of Health & Human Services that even small medical organizations are not exempt from fines for lax security and protection of confidential consumer information. If you need more convincing - spend a few minutes browsing the Office of Civil Rights website and you will find other case examples by type of medical facility.

Workplace Wellness - Employee Engagement

Posted by kapnick on Jan 24, 2013 3:31:12 PM

Many employers balk at investing in health management programs because the keeping employees engaged in the program seems to have diminishing returns. This is when there is great excitement about the program at the beginning, but as the program continues, the participation numbers tend to wane. This can be true if the program is not entered into thoughtfully with the beginning, middle, and end result in mind. There is some organic truth to employees becoming less interested in wellness as their daily lives take precedent over everything else. If people had the discipline and ability to stick to a wellness plan by themselves, there would be little or no need for a corporate wellness program, not to mention the entire fitness industry which built upon the masses’ inability to stick to a wellness program by themselves. This being said, it should come as no surprise that people’s interest in your wellness program will wax and wane if you do not put in the proper rules of engagement.

Health and Wellness - School lunches and food allergies

Posted by kapnick on Jan 16, 2013 3:09:32 PM

At the beginning of the school year I received a list of peanut free “healthy” snacks that I was allowed to pack for my children’s’ snack time or lunch. Of course, I lost the original list so I went to their school today and asked for another copy. When I picked it up I was astounded by the poor nutritional choices that were offered on the list. This motivated me to create a better peanut-free snack list for parents — and of course, all of you!
