Incorporating Mental Health into Workplace Wellness Mental health issues such as stress, anxiety and depression are routinely listed as top concerns in employee health surveys, and are the second leading cause of workplace absenteeism. Even moderate depressive or anxiety symptoms can affect work performance and productivity. Most employees agree that their mental and personal problems spill over into their professional lives and have a direct impact on their job performance. As you can see, it's in the employer’s best interest to address mental health as part of their wellness program.
More and more companies are addressing the mental aspects of their employees’ health. Organizations can do more to promote integrated mental and physical health care by creating supportive workplaces that encourage self-screening and connect employees to resources. It’s great to see employees getting their blood pressure readings, clocking 10-minute miles, but what if they’re completely overwhelmed with their work/life demands? A recent ComPsych report revealed 64% of employees have high levels of stress and report extreme fatigue or feeling out of control (see attachment). Aside from its effect on physical health, mental stress impacts productivity, attendance, and overall effectiveness. That’s why some companies offer their employees mindfulness workshops, yoga stress reduction classes, and “energy pods” for napping.

Here are some ideas to consider for your organization:
- Offer stress reduction presentations on topics like conflict resolution, managing multiple priorities, project planning, personal finance planning and parenting.
- Provide flexible scheduling for access to classes during or after work. Classes could include yoga, meditation, physical activity and self-help groups.
- Educate managers and supervisors in recognizing mental health as a factor in performance issues. Address mental health issues specific to their needs.
- Offer an Employee Assistance Program (http://ebn.benefitnews.com/gallery/ebn/12-questions-to-ask-eap-provider-2730999-1.html?ET=ebnbenefitnews:e6261:2202844a:&st=email&utm_source=editorial&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=EBN_inBrief_022113)
- Provide materials and messages about mental health, mental illnesses, suicide prevention, trauma and health promotion through brochures, fact sheets, paycheck stuffers and intranet.
