Decades ago, worksite wellness began as a way to promote health awareness among employees with “lunch & learn” classes, walking programs, health fairs and more. However, with today’s technology, most employers have moved to online/digital wellness programs. But are high-tech programs enough for positive behavior change in an employee population?
To get the most out of a worksite wellness program, companies need to consider complementing their online/digital programs with high-touch, on-site wellness events.
Here are 8 examples of on-site programs:
- Incorporate wellness during meetings, such as a facilitator leading the team in stretches
- One-on-one health coaching
- Blood pressure checks
- Health-related worksite policies (such as a smoke-free campus, flexible work schedules)
- Onsite fitness classes
- Well-lit stairwells with motivational messages to encourage employees to take the stairs
- Weight-loss challenges
- Dedicated wellness space (for health library, chair massages, relaxation or consultations)
Another idea to consider is hiring or contracting a health promotion specialist for your organization. This individual would be responsible for establishing a culture of health, coordinate/implement onsite wellness activities and encourage employees to take an interest in their health.
Remember - while high-tech wellness initiatives may be convenient and easy to implement, to get the most out of a wellness program high-touch wellness events need to be included as part of the overall strategy - just adding to the mix!
